Abstract

Abstract Alexander George Mitchell was the first to formalise the pronunciation of Australian English (henceforth AusE) in 1946 and 1965. He did it in an exocentric context taking British English (henceforth BrE) as reference, thus facilitating the comparison between the two dialects. Still the author had already noted that the acoustic reality of AusE could not be reflected by this system. Since the second half of the twentieth century crucial work has been done in terms of normalizing and institutionalizing AusE from an endocentric viewpoint. Having studied the different transcription systems proposed between 1965 and 2008 I will show how the choice of a phonological transcription system not only brings up issues regarding the norm and the phonetic realisation but also constitutes one of the major elements of identity construction in Australia. I will also look at how the description of the vowels of Australian English raises a phonological issue which goes beyond the question of their transcription.
